View Full Version : Feelings on covers?

What is your general feeling about when an artist covers another song? I know there are a lot of people who automatically hate the new one just because the old one is so classic. I generally have that feeling too, though there are times when the new one is just so unimaginably wonderful that it's difficult not to love it. For example, Tom Jones' version of "I Who Have Nothing" is one of my favorite songs, and I didn't even realize it was a cover, originally sung by a woman, no less.

I recently started listening to the song "Skinny Love" by Bon Iver. Then I found a version by a young English girl named Birdy, and she resang it so it sounds like a power ballad. At first, I didn't like it, but then I kept thinking about it. And now I can't stop listening to it.

Which is better, do you think?

if it is done well, i dont mind it, but otherwise... GTFO.

one of my teachers is a metallica guy (like me) and before class, he played a cover of Enter Sandman... There was a woman singing it.

I immediately dismissed it, because what makes Metallica great, is James Hetfield's Grumble. A woman can't do that, so it is a disgrace to the original artist.

I basically agree with all the above. They can be better on occasion but generally they are poorly done compared to the original, But it's nice to get a surprise when you expect it to bed bad but turns out amazing.

Covers can be good, covers can be horrible.

Good: Elvis Costello's "Peace love and Understanding"
Bad: That Smooth Criminal cover from that band nobody remembers.

Honorable mention to Marylon Manson's Personal Jesus, good cover....horrible video. It made no sense.

Alien Ant Farm is the band that covered it. It was their 1 hit wonder.

OT:It really depends on who does the cover of what song and your taste in music. I actually liked the remake of Smooth Criminal. It was more up beat then the original. I also heard the cover 1st before the original which probably affected my judgement on the song. If I heard the original 1st, I might have had a different point of view.

The only way it works well is if the artist creates an entirely different song, in a sense.
Bob Dylan wrote "All Along the Watchtower" but Jimi Hendrix gave the song a new soul.
Birdy's cover is beautiful, and mainly because she makes it her own.

I don't know how to put youtube songs up and show the video, so if someone lets me know I'll fix that.

Click the vid icon at the top bar and enter full youtube link there, for example I put your first vid between these two: [V I D E O]Put link here[/V I D E O] with no space and you get this, if you don't understand quote this message

Depends on the song, and who's doing it. I have heard some I like and some I don't. @King....Only Metallica can play Metallica. Theres no way someone can cover one of their songs and be close to as good as the original.

True. I just can't hear Shakira singing Nothing Else Matters. It is something that shouldn't be done in the first place. But covers are meant to make the song better most times. So I guess it is a good thing.

What annoys me is that every year the winner of X Factor releases a cover of someone else's song, and it automatically get's to number one. Even though none of them are as good as the original. Except for when everyone rebelled and got Rage Against The Machine to beat it that time (this was in the UK).

Other than that though, if an artist has a generally good idea to make the song different, and they make it their own, then I really don't mind.
