Frozen 'space sperm' passes fertility test

    Source: BBC News

Healthy baby mice have been born using freeze-dried sperm stored in the near-weightless environment of space.

    Spoiler!

    TL;DR Version
    • Transporting sperm away from Earth is feasible; sperm banks could be even made on the Moon as backup for Earth disasters
    • Cosmic rays from space can damage DNA in sperm
    • Sperm can swim much faster in low gravity
    • In the study, freeze-dried mouse sperm samples were stored on the International Space Station (ISS) for nine months before being sent back to Earth and thawed at room temperature
    • Sperm DNA was slightly damaged by the trip but was still able to fertilize mouse eggs and create apparently healthy "space pups"
    • Space pups showed similar fertilization and birth rates to healthy, "ground control" mice
    • Researchers believe some of the sperm DNA damage is repaired by the egg once it has been fertilized
    • Researchers believe the ISS was a somewhat sheltered environment to use as the test zone for space; the actual risk of radiation damage at the Moon and beyond would be much higher

that's interesting, perhaps hope of our species surviving when we destroy this planet by our neglect of it's 'health' or when the sun becomes a supernova.
